Forestry Nurseries Project by order of and in close cooperation with the Government of Tajikistan
2 Billion Trees for a Sustainable Future
Why Tajikistan, why now?
Total Forest Area: 410,000 ha
Only 3% of land forested
High climate vulnerability
The threat to Tajikistan
Glacial melt threatening water security
Erosion and land degradation increasing
90% of land is mountainous and climate-vulnerable
growing incidence of natural disasters, such as landslides, floods and drought, and a general decline in the availability and quality of water
Rehabilitating and protecting forests is therefore of vital importance in the process of adapting to Climate Change
Project Vision & Mission
The Project Vision:
The President of the Republic of Tajikistan, His Excellency Emomali Rahmon has launched the Tajikistan's State Program for Greening the Republic until 2040, a national program adopted in June 2024 that aims to plant over 2 billion trees by 2040 to improve the country's ecological situation, combat climate change, and create better living conditions.
Our Mission:
10 nurseries producing 200 million seedlings per year
235,000 ha reforested using high-quality, stress-resistant tree species
Job creation – revitalising rural economies
Preventing soil erosion, landslides and desertification
The Nursery Network
10 nurseries of 13.5 ha = 135 ha
Specialised by region and species
Carbon Storage
Total projected CO₂ equivalent stored: 108 million tons
Average: ~432 tons CO₂ equivalent per hectare
Storage grows slowly in early years, accelerates after 2045
50% of total CO₂ equivalent may be stored by 2070, 90% by 2100
Forests planted through this project will act as a massive natural carbon sink, storing emissions equivalent to 25 million cars over a year.
This makes it one of the most impactful afforestation efforts in Central Asia.
Climate and Environmental Impact
• 2 billion trees = ~108 Mt CO₂ equivalent stored
• Improved biodiversity & soil retention
• Stabilised microclimates and water cycles
• Resilience to drought and extreme weather
